Curriculum

Every day at Kerribana Primary School starts with Connections.

This is a 15-minute learning block where teachers, educators and students engage in pro-social, active and engaging relationship-building activities. Through activating their appreciation of each other, students start the day being greeted by names, shown they are valued, and feeling safe.

Mathematics

At Kerribana, maths is more than just numbers – it is about problem solving, reasoning, and seeing the patterns that shape the world around us. We value a classroom where the students feel confident to explore mathematical ideas, try new strategies, and make sense of complex concepts.

We balance explicit teaching with hands-on tasks, real-world challenges, and multi-ability group opportunities for collaboration and learning together, including learning from other students. We focus on growing key skills in number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability, with the aim of having every Kerribana student graduating as confident, numerate mathematicians.

English

In the early years, building strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking and listening is at the heart of our English program. We create a language-rich environment that fosters curiosity, imagination, and a love of storytelling.

Students begin their literacy journey with a strong focus on oral language and phonemic awareness supported by authentic texts that make learning meaningful and engaging. Through daily reading and writing experiences students build confidence in decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Our approach blends explicit instruction with playful, hands-on experiences that support early writing and language development. Storytelling, role-play, and shared reading sessions help students develop their understanding of story structure, characters, and ideas, while also encouraging creativity and self-expression.

In Years 3–6, English is about helping students develop strong communication skills while fostering a deep appreciation for language and literature. Our focus is on creating confident readers, articulate writers, and thoughtful speakers who can express themselves clearly and creatively.

Students engage with a wide range of texts—from novels and biographies to news articles and poetry—building skills in comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. Our explicit teaching of key reading strategies (like inferring, summarising, and questioning) is paired with opportunities for meaningful discussion and reflection.

In writing, students explore different genres and styles, learning how to structure their ideas, choose strong vocabulary, and write for various audiences and purposes. We also place a strong focus on spelling, grammar, and vocabulary development, ensuring students have the tools they need to communicate effectively in both academic and real-world contexts.
